What to Consider When Purchasing a Bunkbed

Bunkbeds have long been a mainstay of children’s rooms, and for good reason.  They are usually cheaper than buying two beds, they save a lot of space, and kids seem to genuinely enjoy them.  But if you are thinking about buying a bunkbed for your own children’s room, it is important to not just grab the first one that looks good to you.   bunkbeds are surprisingly complex, and in order to get the most value for the money, you need to understand the primary traits of any bunkbeds for sale and why they matter to you.

Here is what everyone who is in the market for a bunkbed should know before making a purchase.

Design  - Remember that you are purchasing a kids bunkbed, so you should pay very close attention to the designs available.  Firstly, look at how well you think that the design will fit your child’s room.  If you are concerned about aesthetics, you definitely shouldn’t choose a bunkbed that is colored too brightly when the wallpaper or paint is a more muted color.  You should also consider your child’s interests.  Sheets for the mattresses on your bunkbed can have a wide variety of colors and styles.  If your sons or daughters have an interest in a particular cartoon character, see if they have sheets available with that character’s image on them.   You should also take a look at the railings to ensure that the wood stain matches the color scheme of your children’s room or your house.

Layout - Do you want the traditional Twin-over-Twin style bunkbed?  Many people today are opting for the Twin-over-Full bunkbed so that their child can have a good sized bed and have a smaller bed available for sleepovers.  There are also a Full-over-Full bunkbeds to consider if you have the space.

Safety  - Modern bunkbeds are built to meet very exacting safety standards, but it is still important that you double-check any safety features that might be available.  Firstly, you should make certain that the bunkbed has a railing.  This railing is designed to prevent your child form falling off the bed should they move too close the edge in the middle of the night.  You should also make certain that this railing doesn’t have any big gaps in it.  A gap of more than three and one half inches increases the risk of injury by getting a body park stuck in it.  If you already have a bunkbed that has a gap that exceeds this, it is usually easily correctable.  Simply place a plank or other piece of wood in-between the gap in order to close it.

Durability   - Every parent can report accurately that children typically do not take very good care of their possessions.  They seem to work under the assumption that everything is indestructible, and can survive even the roughest treatment.  This is why choosing a bunkbed that is built solidly is crucial.  While most of the durability is affected by the bunkbed construction, some of the durability is affected by how well you assemble it.  Make certain to tighten every screw and bolt as much as you can.  Loose bolts won’t just make for an unsteady system, they can also slowly damage the wood over time, thus severely decreasing the longevity of the bed.

Assembly Time - This shouldn’t be too high on your priority list, because it is obviously better to spend more time assembling a bunkbed that lasts rather than spend little time on a flimsy bed, but you should still ask the retailer about how long it takes to assemble the bed.  You should also ask if you will need any additional tools to assemble the bed properly, and if there is any other equipment that you will need to purchase in order to have a complete bed.  This will allow you get all the equipment you need and schedule your assembly time beforehand.
